Wine Grape Varieties and Flavor Profiles of AJA Vineyards Wines

April 5, 2023
Our new white wines. Left to right: 2022 Eds’ Sauvignon Blanc, 2022 Chardonnay, 2022 Rosé

In the vast and interesting world of wine there are a great variety of types of grapes for wine production . At AJA Vineyards we choose grape types and blends that capture the best attributes of the soil from the Malibu Coast and from this make a variety of types of wine.

Wine connoisseurs often find it easy to differentiate the flavors and scents from one wine to another. But for beginners, distinguishing the different wines can be a challenge. So, to help you select the best wines for your palate, we are going to share with you about the varieties we grow, and how we make them here at AJA.

We are proud to have in our portfolio eight different types of wines to offer. Each with their own special taste:

Happy Canyon of Santa Barbara Sauvignon Blanc

This wine is a fan favorite. A light and refreshing wine, with flavors of fresh green apples, lemon, lime and grapefruit and a few hints of guava. Sauvignon blancs are mainly fruit-driven, their aromatics come from compounds called pyrazines. Pyrazines often taste like bell peppers or jalapeños.  In addition to the fabulous fruit bouquet, our Sauvignon Blancs have hints of green bell pepper, jalapeño and a touch of salinity to help balance the wine to make it the ultimate refreshing sip all the time.

Happy Canyon of Santa Barbara Sauvignon Blanc

Malibu Coast Sauvignon Blanc

A dry wine with notes of gooseberry, grapefruit, and pineapple. While subtle, you’ll taste hints of white flowers and green peppers too. On the palate, the wine is light bodied with racy acidity, but it is still smooth with a beautiful, vibrant, citrusy zest. Our Sauvignon Blanc pairs perfectly with many dishes, but you can never go wrong with a cheese plate with feta or chèvre or any asian-driven flavors.

Paso Robles Rosé of Grenache Gris

A beautiful lilac thin-skinned variety that comes from  Grenache Noir crossing with Grenache Blanc in nature. This creates the Grenache Gris variation. Our Paso Robles Rosé has notes of peach, lychee and strawberry. A mouthwatering and easy to sip wine, perfect for a sunny day.

Malibu Coast Rosé

Scents of peach, nectarine, yellow cherries and strawberries engulf your senses from the very first taste. Aromas of salinity and wet stone complexity accompany the primary flavors, making it a very refreshing wine. Though it is bright, crisp and dry, it still has all of those beautiful flavors hitting you in the mid-palate making you want to finish the entire bottle in one sitting.

Malibu Coast Syrah

A rich, powerful, and sometimes meaty red wine. When this wine hits the glass, you are greeted with a beautiful aromatic of flavor. Our Syrahs have compelling bouquets of blackberry, raspberry, strawberry and vanilla, with subtle hints of black pepper. Pleasant mid-pallet tannins round out the experience with a nice mocha finish.

Malibu Coast Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is the most popular wine in America and is loved by wine enthusiasts around the world. A variation created by a cross between Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, this bright and rich Cabernet Sauvignon is flavorful packed with red and black berries, cherries and a hint of licorice. Notes of salinity, damp earth and terracotta pair beautifully with the succulent fruit and violet flavors. There’s a lovely tannin that coats your palate and an underripe tartness that prepares your mouth for your next bite of food or sip.

Our 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon, a fan favorite wine variety in California.

Malibu Coast FIVE Red Wine

A delicious blend of Malibu Coast Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc estate fruit. When you swirl this glass of wine, you can notice the bright red cherry, red currant, rhubarb and raspberry. Hints of beef jerky, strawberry balsamic vinegar, and white and black cracked pepper. On the palate, it’s rich and tannic. It is silky and warm drying your mouth just enough to ask you for another sip.

Central Coast Chardonnay

Our newest addition to our portfolio of wines. Our Chardonnay is picked from a single vineyard in the middle of sunny Central California. After harvesting these ripe and delicious grapes, we bring them to our facility to get crushed and begin fermentation. In order to bring balance to this wine we’ve created a blend of tank fermented and aged chardonnay and neutral oak fermented and aged chardonnay. Our Chardonnay has hints of apple, pear and persimmon alongside citrusy notes of lime peel, lemon wedge and tangerine seamlessly blended with brioche, slight hint of butterscotch.

Every single one of these wines has a special taste and they are all made with love, from our vineyards to your cellar.

Cheers!
