What to Wear Wine Tasting

Courtney here once again sharing some tips on what to wear when going wine tasting! Wine tasting is one of my favorite things to do in my free time. I love the quality time I get to spend with my friends, as well as dressing the part of a wine connoisseur! At Cal Poly SLO, I am surrounded by stunning wineries and exquisite tasting rooms, so my friends and I often visit them on the weekends.

In the last year or so, I have visited multiple wineries on the Central Coast and have compiled a list of tips and tricks to help you put together the perfect wine tasting outfit!

Comfy Chic

Wine tasting is definitely an elegant and sophisticated occasion, so I would opt to wear something that fits that vibe. I usually tend to gravitate towards a midi or maxi dress because I feel put together, but am still comfortable and able to drink and eat to my heart’s content! 

On another note, layering is also super important when wine tasting. In California, it is very common to be seated outside for wine tasting, so bringing a sweater or jacket you can wear when tasting and easily take on and off is always a good idea in case it gets chilly. If you’re touring any caves, even if it’s hot outside, it gets pretty cold in there too!

Do’s and Don’ts of What to Wear Wine Tasting

Do

• Wear closed toed shoes or boots. You may end up walking through vineyards, fields, or caves so leave the heels and sandals at home.
• Dress comfortably. Whether you’re sitting and tasting or walking through the vineyards. Always be prepared. Wine tasting is casual dress.
• Layer up on your SPF. Face and body sunscreen are very important–even in the winter months!

Don’t

• Wear any strong perfumes or cologne. You don’t want to offset the aromas of the wine.
• Don’t forget sunglasses or a hat if you know you will be spending time outside in the sun. 
• Wear something that you are worried about getting dirty. We’re not saying you’re going to spill, but if you do, make sure you can clean it!

Outfit Ideas for Men and Women 

Comfortable chic is the look I aim for when selecting the perfect wine tasting outfit!

For our feminine selection, I love a midi dress with a plush sweater and some Veja sneakers. I also love the look of tailored pants, a fitted t-shirt, and some nice flats. 

For menswear, you can never go wrong with linen pants and a linen shirt to top it off. Depending on where you are, you might want to opt for something different like nice pants and a button up, or dressing it down with jeans. A nice, collared button up shirt with either long or short sleeves is perfect for a trip to the tasting room!
